Who writes this blog?
Em does! Not Emma, not Emily, NEVER Emi, just Em. Well actually, Emine does, but sometimes even I pronounce it wrong so I don’t expect anybody else to try. I was born, raised and still live in southeast London.
What can I find here?
Butter, cream, eggs, white flour and other gluten heavy ingredients. Not forgetting pounds of chocolate, preferably 53%. This blog is an attempt at celebrating traditional baking ingredients, and making the best use of them. But this year I’m going to try baking with coconut oil, even if its only to grease my baking pans, because I don’t think my childbearing hips can afford not to.
Why did you start a baking blog?
Baking has been a daily thought process of mine since the moment my mum poured whatever cake batter it was into a large doughnut ring pan in our flat back in 1997. As I regrettably missed the chance to study culinary arts at university, I knew I needed somewhere to vent my obsession, so I went with the times and started sharing recipes online.
What camera do you use?
Up until July 2012 I was using a Nikon D60 with a kit lens. From July 2012 onwards I’ve been using a Canon 60D (which I love) + 50mm 1.8 lens all of which I’m still getting to grips with! You can check out my portfolio here.
Where did you learn how to bake?
My mum and her two sisters and their mum, I used to watch them make hundreds of biscuit wedding favours. They used to stir everything with their bare hands, I wish this was still a thing. I also studied food technology up until 2/3 years ago, but there was nothing I despised more than biochemistry, unless it had something to do with crystallisation and ice cream, or caramel, but even then I sucked.
Favourite baking blogs/books?
There’s a list, here. As for books, I’m partial to a bit of Nigella, Joanne Chang, Leith's Baking Bible and Miette as my go-to.
